How to not spend a ton of money on a big move

On Monday, I wrote about how much it cost me to move from Montreal to Calgary. I mentioned a few times that, yes, I could have made the move for cheaper (bringing more food on the bus, not sassing the security guard, not changing my dates) but now, let’s look at the ways that I kept costs as low as possible: I took the bus. Do you know how much it costs to fly from YUL to YYC with 80lbs of luggage? $520. My bus ticket was $149.50 once everything was said and done, resulting in a savings of $370.50. Additional savings: The bus station was closer to my hostel than the airport is which led to a taxi bill of a whopping $12 I stayed in a hostel while apartment hunting. At $30/night, I got a bed, an internet connection, free breakfast and free laundry — what more does a job hunter need? I found an apartment as soon as possible.
