I was perhaps a bit naive when I moved from Montreal to Calgary. I had imagined my transportation methods would be the same as back home — I would walk to the grocery store, take the train to work, hop on an inter-city bus if I needed to get away for the weekend, ride a bike through the city with my cute helmet… Unfortunately, Calgary is absolutely the poster-child for urban sprawl and, even though I live and work in what Calgarians consider to be “near a train station”, I still find myself walking at least an hour per day. I’m not complaining about the exercise, but according to about 95% of the people I meet, I am absolutely backwards to not want to buy a car. Sure, having a car would make my life easier but I still don’t see the point: 1- The expense Buying a car would mean a drop in my savings or a monthly payment — neither of which appeal to me right now. Add in the cost of insurance, maintenance and gas and we’re looking at well over the $94 my monthly transit pass costs me. 2- The lack of exercise I like walking. […]
