By now you might have heard about Reston Manitoba — the tiny town of 550 people that is selling plots of land for a minimal price in order to increase population and tax revenue. The deal works like this: You pay a $1000 deposit and have a year to develop the lot. If you don’t finish within a year you forfeit your deposit money. If you do finish, the town will return $990 (resulting in an effective land price of $10). The town will even throw in a $6000 grant! Is this a fantastic opportunity or what?! Sure, you’ll have to live in Reston Manitoba but if your job is relatively flexible (freelancers, teacher, nurse — any high demand, easily transportable job) you can move here, get free land and pay low property taxes. Opportunities like this are actually why I contemplated becoming a teacher. I got accepted to the education program and then thought long and hard about a) if I really dislike children as much as I think I do (yes) and b) whether I was prepared to spend 4 years in university (no).
