I made two mistakes when I started working in the hotel industry. The first was to assume that any city was a good place to launch a hospitality career (Calgary is not) and the second was that people on vacation would be happy. My logic was deeply flawed — I’m always happy when I’m on vacation and I only stay in hostels so why wouldn’t people who get to stay in more luxurious accommodations be miserable? It was going to be a great working environment! What I failed to understand is that some people are assholes. Not “hotel staff are my slave” assholes — those people I expected — but the “I can’t sleep in a queen-sized bed overlooking the mountains because my two dogs who I snuck in and who will pee all over the carpet need their own beds” assholes. Then there were the people who don’t have credit cards. No we don’t take cash. No, Visa Debit isn’t Visa. No, I don’t think that’s stupid.
