Financial stories seem to be all the rage these days and so I thought that I’d share mine Here’s an artist’s rendition of my net worth chart: I’ve been tracking my money since September 2008 — when I was 20 years old. I had been living on my own for the past two years in various apartments around the city. I had just bought a car and realized, after the gas tank leaked and I had two flat tires in a row, that I needed to get my financial matters in order. Even though I was only spending about $200/week (including bills), I had about $6000 in debt because of my braces and my fancy, private school tuition. My braces payments were $99/month and my student loans were, obviously, not due. January 2009: I start working full-time while going to school and work over-time every weekend. Somehow, it only takes me nine months to have a positive net worth. My monthly expenses are crazy — $500 in rent and utilities (downtown!), $85 in cell phone costs, $400 in personal expenses, $300 in tuition… And I’m paying off debt at a rate of $650/month! I move to a cheaper apartment and make my last college tuition payment at the end of 2009. […]
